Mama Peace is passionate about helping parents after the baby arrives!

The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves", and is now commonly used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to parents during pregnancy, delivery and the postpartum time.

What does a Postpartum Doula Do?

A postpartum doula cares for parents during the first weeks and months following the arrival of a new baby. This postpartum transition is a critical time for families to bond and create a nurturing home environment. A birthing parent may be recovering physically and emotionally from birth, and parents are often overwhelmed, sleep deprived and may need more help than expected. A postpartum doula can help bring peace, and sanity!

Postpartum doula care helps keep your household running smoothly while everyone adjusts and welcomes the newest member(s) of the family and can include:

  • Breastfeeding and chestfeeding positioning and support

  • Newborn care and understanding their behavior

  • Sleep solutions

  • Sibling support (care and attention for siblings to ease the adjustment)

  • Non-medical physical and emotional recovery

  • Resources and referrals for postpartum mood disorders, including postpartum depression and anxiety, for both the birthing parent and/or partner

  • Household/nursery organization

  • Meal preparation and planning

  • Local resources and referrals

Postpartum care gives you the following:

  • Time to rest and recover

  • Time to get to know your baby

  • Time with your family and other children

  • An extra set of hands to get things done around the house

  • Continuous non-judgmental support and information

  • Peace of mind and empowerment during the postpartum transition

  • Validation, empathy and support

Scheduling

Mama Peace will work with you to develop a flexible postpartum doula schedule that meets your needs. It's common to schedule several 2-4 hour shifts a week for two months after the arrival of the baby. A minimum of 2 hours per shift is required.
